doggerels

From my mother, in the deepest recesses of my childhood, two doggerels.

Mairzy dotes and
Dozey dotes and
Little lamsey divey
A kiddelee divey two
Wouldn't you?

Vaguely springish. Hope I got it right enough. And my favorite query for spring:

Spring is sprung
The grass is riz.
I wonder where
The birdies is?

The 'English translation' of the first poem:

Mares eat oats and
Does eat oats and
Little lambs eat ivy.
A kid'll eat ivy, too.
Wouldn't you?

My mom would add:

Spring, Spring
Beautiful Spring
All The Birds
Are On The Wing

My, my

Re:
Ooh, that's not quite how I know it, but similar!!

Spring is sprung, the grass is riz.
I wonder where the birdie is?

I hear the birdie's on the wing.
How absurd!
I always thought the wing was on the bird!

I always heard:

Spring has sprung,
Gras has riz,
I wonders where
The flowers is?

Summer has gone,
Fall has fell,
Winter's here,
And it's cold as hell.

Isn't that by Ogden Nash, or perhaps Shel Silverstein?

Thanks! Knowing my mother, Nash. We had every book there was. Which is odd, because 'hell' would have been well beyond either of my parents' vocabularies.

Anyway, I'm far too old for Silverstein and childhood in the same sentence.*g*

One I remember from an old Hagar the Horrible comic. I only remember two verses now, but a little bird comes in and tells a poem to get Hagar out of bed and moving, and one couplet is:

Now is the vernal equinox
Time to wash your dirty sox

At the end of it, Hagar says:

Winter's dull and
Spring's a bummer.
Wake me up
When it is summer.

My mother sang "Mares Eat Oats" too! Hee! Did your mother go to Jewish girls' camps in New York too?

Re:
She was a preacher's kid from Nebraska.*g* I think it may have been a popular song some time Back Then.
